Y?ko Hikasa, Yuko Kaida, Takaya Hashi, Mutsumi Tamura, Yoshino Nanj?, more join cast of October 5 anime

The official website for the anime of Labo Asai‘s Saredo Tsumibito wa Ry? to Odoru: Dances with the Dragons (literally, “Even So, Sinners Dance with Dragons: Dances with the Dragons“) light novel series revealed 16 new cast members for the show on Wednesday. (Note: The romanizations for the character names and terms are not official)

Y?ko Hikasa as Jivunya Lorezzo, an Arlian born amongst humans, and Gayus’ lover. Her pointed ears, silver hair, and fair skin make her stand out. She is known to be just but affectionate, and she worries about Gayus, who puts himself in danger many times. Gayus often says she is wasted on a man like him. She follows the Arlian style of atrocious cooking. She works at an apothecary, and while she seems composed, she shows a fearsome side when driven to a corner.

Yuko Kaida as Nidvolk, the woman responsible for the serial murders of spell equationists in the city of Eridana. She has waist-length black hair and green eyes, with porcelain white skin and clothes that seem to banish away the night. She wields an offensive spell equation that is rarely seen or used that gives her control over gravity. She prowls the Eridanan nights in search of challengers.

Takaya Hashi as Mordin Orjes Gyunei, a member of one the five patrician houses of the Tsebern Dragon Empire, and a delegate of the Emperor Orjes. Among his many titles, he is also a cardinal of the Revelator church. He is a middle-aged man whose smile is never far from his lips, and an idealist who loves the state, the people, and the world above all, but also a pragmatist when it comes to their protection. In the Dragon Empire, where the tutelage and employ of spell equationists is at the center of the country, he possesses no talent in spell equations, but instead moves the state through politics, warcraft, and guile.

Mutsumi Tamura as Yorkan, the Second of the Twelve Wings, Mordin’s cadre generals. A staff officer and a renowned sage, Yorkan is endowed with eyes of ever-changing color and an androgynous appearance, which renders both age and gender unknowable. As a sage, Yorkan is allowed to voice opinions to the Emperor, and is also a more than accomplished spell equationist that commands respect. However, Yorkan is somewhat of a sadist, who even the other Twelve Wings keep at arm’s length.

Yoshino Nanj? as Curaso Opt Koga, the Twelfth of the Twelve Wings, Mordin’s cadre of generals, and an unmatched offensive spell equationist who acts entirely on Mordin’s word. She has almond eyes and short black hair, which shows her eastern ancestry. She fled from her country, where she had headed a clan of ninja. As Mordin’s personal aide, her tasks include everything from gathering information and assassination. She has a liking of pickled vegetables. Curaso is not her real name, but one she adopted for ease of pronunciation by those from the Ukouto continent. She wields the demonic sword staff “Yagarasu” (Night Raven).

Takanori Hoshino as Jesper Livy Raki, the Ninth of the Twelve Wings. He strikes an imposing figure, with his black hair and eyes, and eyepatched right eye. He is a Marquis and the current patriarch of the Raki fmaily, who are often called the “Slaughtering Raki.” Honest and direct, he has pledged his absolute loyalty to Mordin. He is skilled in the eastern fencing style of iaidō, and an alchemical form of spell equations. He has a soft spot for his younger brother. He wields the demonic sword staff “Kuzuryūgaken” (Nine-Headed Dragon’s Fang), as well as the short sword staff “Kuzuryūsōken” (Nine-Headed Dragon’s Talon).

Sora Tokui as Berdrit Livy Raki, the Tenth of the Twelve Wings. He has distinct black hair and eyes, and wears flight goggles and a smile that leaves an impression of fleeting youthfulness. He is Jesper’s younger twin brother. He often displays acts of cruelty that he nevertheless plays off as innocent. He uses spell equations that manipulate laws of physics, allowing him to pass through or even summon material objects. He wields the demonic sword staff “Sora Watari Speripedes” (Speripedes the Sky-Crosser).

In addition, the anime has cast Akira Ishida, Go Inoue, Atsushi Imaruoka, Motomu Kiyokawa, Hiro Shimono, Tomokazu Sugita, Aya Suzaki, Rintarou Nishi, and Rica Matsumoto in as-yet unspecified roles.

The story revolves around “jushiki” (lit. spell equations), the equations that govern the quantum constant “h” of action, change the laws of physics at the local scale, give birth to TNT explosives and poison gas, and cause incredible physical phenomena such as plasma and nuclear fusion. Two “jushikishi” (spell equationists) who use jushiki in battle are Gayus (who deals with bad luck with tact) and the beautiful but cruel sword-wielder Gigina. These two bounty hunters are caught up in a battle with dragons in the city of Eridana and in the intrigue of great nations.

The publisher Shogakukan describes the story as the “ultimate work that founded the dark light novel genre that changed the concept of light novels.”

The anime will premiere on TBS on October 5 in the late-night 26:28 time slot (effectively, October 6 at 2:28 a.m.), and it will premiere on BS-TBS on October 7 in the late-night 25:30 time slot (effectively, October 8 at 1:30 a.m.).

Nobunaga Shimazaki (Free!‘s Haruka Nanase, Silver Spoon‘s Shinnosuke Aikawa) is starring as Gayus, and Yoshimasa Hosoya (Haikyu!!‘s Asahi Azumane, Attack on Titan‘s Reiner Braun) is voicing Gigina. They will appear at a stage event for the anime at a 10th anniversary event for Shogakukan‘s Gagaga Bunko on September 23.

Hiroshi Nishikiori (A Certain Magical Index, Azumanga Daioh) is the chief director, and Hirokazu Hanai (episode director for The Future Diary, The Pilot’s Love Song) is directing the series. Takayo Ikami (Penguindrum, Beautiful Bones -Sakurako’s Investigation-) is in charge of series composition, and Masaru Kitao (Death Note, Pops) is designing the characters.

fripSide (Clockwork Planet, A Certain Scientific Railgun) will perform the opening theme song, and Maon Kurosaki (Drifters, The Fruit of Grisaia) will perform the ending theme song.

Asai launched the Saredo Tsumibito wa Ryū to Odoru novel series with illustrations by Miyagi in 2003, and switched publishers from Kadokawa Sneaker Bunko to Shogakukan‘s Gagaga Bunko in 2008. (After the publisher switch, Asai rewrote the story and added the Dances with the Dragons subtitle to its title.) Illustrator Zain replaced Miyagi starting in the 14th volume of Gagaga Bunko’s run. The 19th volume shipped on February 17, and the 20th volume will ship on September 20.

Wataru Mitogawa is drawing a manga adaptation that runs on Shogakukan‘s Sunday Web Every!!! online reading platform. Yaku Haibara adapted the story into previous manga in Kadokawa‘s Beans Ace magazine, and Kadokawa published one volume in 2006. The light novels have also inspired several drama CDs.
